The Society was founded in 1978   when the junior school in Bell Street was threatened with demolition. It was considered that the school buildings were an important legacy from Victorian Wigston and they should and could be put to good community use.The battle was lost, unfortunately,  this loss should not be repeated and Sainsburys now

and Sainsburys now stands on the site of the old school  and concerned local people were determined that this loss should not be repeated.

The Society was formed under the auspices of the Civic Trust which provided a model constitution. Members elect the officers and an executive committee, consisting of the officers and between 5 and 11 of the members. There is an annual subscription to cover administrative expenses and room hire for buildings. These are currently (2008) held on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.15pm at Hawthorn House (Age Concern) in Paddock Street. Meetings usually end by 9pm.
